Unit 2
Lesson 2.3

उम्र — आपकी उम्र क्या है?

umr — āpkī umr kyā hai?
Age — How Old Are You?

Time to learn about age and numbers in Hindi! In this lesson, you'll discover how Indians express age — hint: it's structured differently from English. You'll also learn numbers from 21 to 50 and useful birthday vocabulary. Hindi numbers are unique and don't follow a simple pattern like English, so we'll focus on the most common ones first. Let's celebrate with Sita as she plans a birthday party!

Dialog

Sita is planning a birthday party for her roommate Neha at their PG (Paying Guest) accommodation in Kamla Nagar, a popular student neighborhood near Delhi University. Notice the construction मेरी उम्र ... साल है [merī umr ... sāl hai] (my age is ... years) — this is the standard way to state age in Hindi. The word उम्र [umr] is feminine, which is why the possessive is मेरी [merī] (not मेरा [merā]). Birthday celebrations in India often include cake-cutting (a Western influence) alongside traditional customs like touching elders' feet for blessings.

Pronunciation: Hindi numbers have unique stress patterns. In बीस [bīs], the long ī gets the emphasis. In पच्चीस [paccīs], notice the doubled consonant 'cc' which is held slightly longer. For तोहफ़ा [tohfā], the फ़ [fa] uses a dot (nuqta) under फ — this indicates the Urdu 'f' sound (as in English 'fun'), different from the native Hindi फ [pha] which is an aspirated 'p'.

Grammar: Expressing age (मेरी उम्र ... साल है [merī umr ... sāl hai]) and numbers 21-50

Expressing age in Hindi uses a different structure than English:

  • English: 'I am twenty years old'
  • Hindi: मेरी उम्र बीस साल है [merī umr bīs sāl hai] — literally: 'My age twenty years is'

Alternatively: मैं बीस साल का हूँ [maĩ bīs sāl hū̃] (masculine) / मैं बीस साल की हूँ [maĩ bīs sāl hū̃] (feminine) — literally: 'I twenty years of am'

Note that उम्र [umr] is a feminine noun, so the possessive is always मेरी उम्र [merī umr], not मेरा उम्र.

Hindi numbers 21-50 are each unique words. Unlike English's predictable 'twenty-one, twenty-two,' Hindi numbers evolved from Sanskrit and have been worn down over centuries. The good news: once you learn them, they become second nature. Focus on multiples of 5 and 10 first.

Writing: Sibilants and aspirate (ऊष्म व्यंजन [ūṣma vyañjan])

śa
ṣa
sa
ha

Practice words

WordRomanization
शादीśādī
सालsāl
हैhai
श, ष, स तीनों 'स' की ध्वनि हैं लेकिन मुँह में जगह अलग है। ह एक श्वास-ध्वनि है।
śa, ṣa, sa tīnõ 's' kī dhvani haĩ lekin mũh mẽ jagah alag hai. ha ek śvās-dhvani hai.

Today we learn the sibilants and aspirate (ऊष्म व्यंजन [ūṣma vyañjan]) — four consonants involving friction:

  • श [śa] — like 'sh' in 'ship'. The most common 's' sound in Hindi words.
  • ष [ṣa] — a retroflex 's' (tongue curled back). Rare in everyday speech, mostly in Sanskrit-origin words.
  • स [sa] — like 's' in 'sun'. The dental 's' sound.
  • ह [ha] — like 'h' in 'hat'. A breathy sound.

The difference between श [śa] and स [sa]: श [śa] sounds like English 'sh' (tongue is flat), while स [sa] sounds like English 's' (tongue tip near upper teeth). In casual Delhi Hindi, many people merge these, but the distinction matters for clear speech.

Practice: शादी [śādī] (wedding), साल [sāl] (year), है [hai] (is).

Takeaway

To express age in Hindi, say मेरी उम्र ... साल है [merī umr ... sāl hai] (my age is ... years). Remember that उम्र [umr] is feminine, so it's always मेरी उम्र [merī umr], never मेरा उम्र!

Culture note: In India, birthdays are celebrated with a mix of Western and Indian traditions. The birthday person often touches the feet of elders to receive their blessings (आशीर्वाद [āśīrvād]) before cutting the cake. In many families, a visit to the temple (मंदिर [mandir]) happens in the morning. The birthday person feeds the first piece of cake to their parents — a sign of respect and love. Distributing sweets (मिठाई [miṭhāī]) to neighbors and colleagues is also traditional.
