Unit 10
Lesson 10.3

Vamos viajar!

Let's Travel!

Time to dream about a trip! This lesson combines 'ir + infinitive' (your near-future structure from Unit 8) with the vocabulary of travel planning — tickets, hotels, reservations, suitcases. You'll learn the practical questions you need to ask before any Brazilian getaway: how much, where is it, when do we go. By the end, you'll plan a full weekend to Paraty like a local.

Dialog

Beatriz and Thiago plan a weekend trip to Paraty — a UNESCO-listed colonial town on the coast between Rio and São Paulo. Watch how they use 'vamos + infinitive' for invitations ('Vamos viajar?') and 'vou/vai + infinitive' for firm plans. Notice how prices are stated ('Duzentos reais por diária') and how 'Fechou!' means 'deal!' or 'it's settled!'

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
vou fazer uma reservaI'm going to make a reservation
quanto custa a passagem?how much is the ticket?
Pronunciation: The -agem ending in 'viagem', 'passagem', 'bagagem' always has a nasal '-ẽj̃' sound — /viˈa.ʒẽj̃/. Watch 'hotel' /oˈtɛw/ — the H is silent, and the final -l becomes /w/. 'Pousada' has a diphthong /ow/: /powˈza.dɐ/. And 'passaporte' stresses the third syllable: /pa.sa.ˈpɔʁ.tʃi/, with the carioca 'te' softening to 'tchi'.

Grammar: Combining 'ir + infinitivo' (future) with travel vocabulary; asking for trip information

Futuro próximo com 'ir + infinitivo':
| Pronome | Ir | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Eu | vou + viajar | Eu vou viajar para Paraty. |
| Você / Ele / Ela | vai + fazer | Ela vai fazer a reserva. |
| Nós / A gente | vamos / vai + comprar | Nós vamos comprar a passagem. |
| Vocês / Eles / Elas | vão + organizar | Eles vão organizar a mala. |

'Vamos + infinitivo' = Let's... (proposta/convite): Vamos viajar!, Vamos reservar o hotel!

Perguntas úteis para planejar uma viagem:
| Pergunta | Resposta |
|---|---|
| Quanto custa a passagem? | R$ 180 ida e volta. |
| Onde fica o hotel? | Fica no centro histórico. |
| Quanto tempo é a viagem? | Cinco horas de ônibus. |
| Tem quarto disponível? | Tem sim, para duas pessoas. |
| Quanto custa a diária? | Duzentos reais por noite. |

To talk about near-future plans in BR, you use 'ir + infinitive' — the default future in spoken Portuguese. The 'true' future tense (viajarei, viajará) exists but sounds literary; in daily speech, nobody uses it.

Ir + infinitivo (near future):

PronounIrExample
Euvou + infinitiveEu vou viajar para Paraty.
Você / Ele / Elavai + infinitiveEla vai fazer a reserva.
Nós / A gentevamos / vai + infinitiveNós vamos comprar a passagem.
Vocês / Eles / Elasvão + infinitiveEles vão organizar a mala.

Note: 'a gente' (super common in BR) conjugates as 3rd-person singular: A gente vai viajar.

'Vamos + infinitivo' = Let's! (invitation/suggestion)

  • Vamos viajar! → Let's travel!

  • Vamos reservar o hotel agora? → Shall we book the hotel now?

Context distinguishes future-plan from invitation. In the dialogue, 'Vamos viajar para Paraty no feriado?' (with '?') is an invitation; 'Vamos precisar fazer reserva logo' is a firm future.

Travel-planning questions (memorize these patterns):

QuestionAnswer
Quanto custa a passagem?R$ 180 ida e volta.
Onde fica o hotel?Fica no centro histórico.
Quanto tempo é a viagem?Cinco horas de ônibus.

Note: 'ida e volta' = round trip; 'só ida' = one way.

Creative Construction

Takeaway

'Ir + infinitive' is BR's default future: vou viajar, vai fazer, vamos comprar, vão organizar. 'Vamos + infinitive' also serves as 'Let's...!' invitations. Travel basics: passagem (ticket), pousada (inn), reserva (booking), diária (per-night rate). Ask 'Quanto custa?', 'Onde fica?', 'Tem quarto disponível?'

Culture note: Paraty (pronounced pah-rah-CHEE) is a classic BR weekend getaway — a UNESCO-listed colonial town with cobblestone streets, white-washed churches, and the Costa Verde's emerald waters on its doorstep. Brazilians pair a pousada stay with a boat trip to nearby islands and a cachaça tasting (Paraty's signature distillate). Other iconic weekend destinations near Rio: Búzios (beach chic), Petrópolis (imperial mountain town), and Ilha Grande (car-free tropical island). From São Paulo: Campos do Jordão (Switzerland-in-Brazil winter retreat) and the Litoral Norte beaches.
