Dialog

Valentina is planning a weekend beach trip and asks Andrés for help. Notice how they use travel vocabulary naturally — el boleto (ticket), la maleta (suitcase), el pasaporte (passport), la reserva (reservation). Valentina also mentions the aeropuerto (airport) and el equipaje (luggage). This is a practical conversation you might have when planning your own trip to Colombia!

Valentina
¡Andrés! Quiero viajar este fin de semana. ¿Me ayudas con la reserva?
(Andrés! Want to-travel this end of week. Me help-you with the reservation?)
Andrés! I want to travel this weekend. Can you help me with the reservation?
Andrés
¡Claro! ¿Adónde quieres ir? ¿A la playa?
(Clear! To-where want-you to-go? To the beach?)
Of course! Where do you want to go? To the beach?
Valentina
Sí, a la playa. Ya tengo el pasaporte y la maleta lista.
(Yes, to the beach. Already have the passport and the suitcase ready.)
Yes, to the beach. I already have the passport and the suitcase ready.
Andrés
¿Y el boleto? ¿Ya tienes el boleto de avión?
(And the ticket? Already have-you the ticket of plane?)
And the ticket? Do you already have the plane ticket?
Valentina
No, todavía no. Necesito comprar el boleto y preparar el equipaje.
(No, still not. Need to-buy the ticket and prepare the luggage.)
No, not yet. I need to buy the ticket and prepare the luggage.
Andrés
¿Necesitas ir al aeropuerto? El viaje va a ser increíble.
(Need-you to-go to-the airport? The trip goes to be incredible.)
Do you need to go to the airport? The trip is going to be incredible.
Valentina
Sí. Tengo la reserva del hotel también. ¡Este viaje va a ser perfecto!
(Yes. Have the reservation of-the hotel also. This trip goes to be perfect!)
Yes. I have the hotel reservation too. This trip is going to be perfect!
Andrés
¡Qué bien! Viajar es lo mejor. ¡Buen viaje!
(How good! To-travel is the best. Good trip!)
Great! Traveling is the best. Have a good trip!

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
quiero viajarI want to travel
buen viajehave a good trip, bon voyage
Pronunciation: Pay attention to the word 'equipaje' — it's pronounced eh-kee-PAH-heh. The 'j' in Spanish always sounds like a strong English 'h', never like the English 'j'. This same sound appears in 'viaje' (bee-AH-heh). Practice: 'el equipaje está en el aeropuerto.'

Grammar: Introduction to pretérito perfecto (present perfect)

Subjecthaber+ Past Participle
yoheviajado / comido / vivido
hasviajado / comido / vivido
él / ella / ustedhaviajado / comido / vivido
nosotros/ashemosviajado / comido / vivido
ellos / ellas / ustedeshanviajado / comido / vivido
Infinitive endingPast participle
-ar →-ado (viajar → viajado)
-er →-ido (comer → comido)
-ir →-ido (vivir → vivido)

The pretérito perfecto (present perfect) is formed with the verb haber (to have) plus a past participle. It works very similarly to English:

  • I have traveledHe viajado
  • You have eatenHas comido
  • She has livedHa vivido

To form the past participle, remove the infinitive ending and add:

  • -ar verbs → -ado (viajar → viajado)

  • -er verbs → -ido (comer → comido)

  • -ir verbs → -ido (vivir → vivido)

Important: Unlike English, nothing goes between 'haber' and the participle in Spanish. You say 'No he viajado' (not 'he no viajado'). The 'no' always goes before 'haber.'

In Latin America, the present perfect is often used for recent or relevant past events, while the simple past (preterite) is used for completed past actions.

Exercises

Fill in the Blanks

Complete each sentence with the missing travel word.

  1. Quiero   a la playa este fin de semana.(an activity — going to another place)
  2. Necesito mi   para el vuelo internacional.(a travel document for international travel)
  3. ¿Ya tienes la   del hotel?(a booking confirmation for accommodation)
  4. Voy al   para tomar el avión.(the place where you catch a plane)
  5. Mi   está lista con toda la ropa.(a bag for carrying clothes on a trip)

Grammar Application

Form the present perfect by writing the correct past participle.

  1. yo / viajar → Yo he  .(viajar → -ado)
  2. tú / comer → Tú has  .(comer → -ido)
  3. ella / vivir → Ella ha  .(vivir → -ido)
  4. nosotros / viajar → Nosotros hemos  .(viajar → -ado)
  5. ellos / comer → Ellos han  .(comer → -ido)

Translation (English → Spanish)

Translate each sentence into Spanish.

  1. I want to travel to the beach.
  2. Do you have the ticket and the passport?
  3. The hotel reservation is ready.
  4. I'm going to the airport with my luggage.
  5. The trip is going to be incredible.

Creative Construction

Write 2-3 sentences about a trip using at least 4 travel words from this lesson.

Takeaway

The present perfect is formed with 'haber' + past participle: he viajado (I have traveled), has comido (you have eaten), ha vivido (he/she has lived). Regular participles end in -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er/-ir verbs).

Culture note: Colombia is a top travel destination in South America. From the Caribbean beaches of Cartagena and Santa Marta to the coffee region (Eje Cafetero) and the vibrant cities of Bogotá and Medellín, there's something for everyone. Domestic flights are affordable, and Colombians love to travel within their own country during 'puentes' (long weekends created by Monday holidays). When Colombians plan a trip, they often say '¡Nos vamos de paseo!' (We're going on an outing!).
