Dialog

Valentina describes her best friend's personality, and Andrés shares about his friend too. Notice how personality adjectives work with 'ser' (to be): 'Es simpática' (She's nice). The intensifier 'muy' (very) goes before the adjective: 'muy simpática.' 'Un poco' (a little) softens: 'un poco serio.' 'Pero' (but) contrasts: 'serio pero amable.' 'También' (also) adds: 'también es inteligente.'

Valentina
Mi mejor amiga es muy simpática y también muy inteligente.
(My best friend is very nice and also very intelligent.)
My best friend is very nice and also very intelligent.
Andrés
¿Es divertida también? Yo tengo un amigo muy divertido pero un poco serio a veces.
(Is-she fun also? I have a friend very fun but a little serious sometimes.)
Is she fun too? I have a very fun friend but he's a little serious sometimes.
Valentina
Sí, es muy divertida. Y es amable con todos. Pero también es un poco tranquila.
(Yes, is very fun. And is kind with everyone. But also is a little quiet.)
Yes, she's very fun. And she's kind to everyone. But she's also a little quiet.
Andrés
Mi amigo es muy serio en el trabajo, pero es divertido con la familia.
(My friend is very serious at the work, but is fun with the family.)
My friend is very serious at work, but he's fun with family.
Valentina
¿Es simpático? Mi amiga es simpática y muy inteligente también.
(Is-he nice? My friend is nice and very intelligent also.)
Is he nice? My friend is nice and very intelligent too.
Andrés
Sí, es muy simpático. Es amable pero un poco tranquilo.
(Yes, is very nice. Is kind but a little quiet.)
Yes, he's very nice. He's kind but a little quiet.
Valentina
Mi amiga y tu amigo son muy simpáticos. ¡Y nosotros también somos simpáticos!

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
es muy simpático/ahe/she is very nice
un poco serio/aa little serious
Pronunciation: The Spanish 'qu' in 'tranquilo' is pronounced like English 'k' — the 'u' is silent! So 'tranquilo' = 'tran-KEE-lo.' This is true whenever you see 'que' or 'qui': the 'u' is silent. Compare: 'que' = 'keh,' 'aquí' = 'a-KEE.' The 'u' is only pronounced in 'güe/güi' (with the diaeresis).

Grammar: Using 'ser' + adjective for personality descriptions — intensifiers (muy, bastante, un poco) and connectors (y, pero, también)

StructureExample
ser + adjectiveElla es simpática.
ser + muy + adjectiveÉl es muy inteligente.
ser + un poco + adjectiveEs un poco serio.
adj + y + adjsimpática y divertida
adj + pero + adjserio pero amable
también + ser + adjTambién es inteligente.

Gender agreement with personality adjectives:
| Masculine | Feminine | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| simpático | simpática | -o → -a |
| divertido | divertida | -o → -a |
| serio | seria | -o → -a |
| amable | amable | no change (-e ending) |
| inteligente | inteligente | no change (-e ending) |

To describe someone's personality, use ser + adjective:

  • Ella es simpática. (She is nice.)

  • Él es inteligente. (He is smart.)

Intensifiers go before the adjective:

  • Muy + adjective = very: Es muy amable. (She is very kind.)

  • Un poco + adjective = a little: Es un poco serio. (He is a little serious.)

  • Bastante + adjective = quite: Es bastante tranquila. (She is quite calm.)

Connectors:

  • y = and: simpática y divertida (nice and fun)

  • pero = but: serio pero amable (serious but kind)

  • también = also/too: También es inteligente. (She's also smart.)

Gender agreement still applies:

  • -o adjectives change: simpático (m) → simpática (f)

  • -e adjectives don't: amable, inteligente (same for both)

Exercises

Fill in the Blanks

Complete each sentence with the missing intensifier, connector, or adjective.

  1. Mi amiga es   simpática. (very)(intensifier meaning 'very')
  2. Él es divertido   un poco serio. (but)(connector meaning 'but')
  3. Ella es inteligente y   amable. (also)(connector meaning 'also')
  4. Mi hermano es     tranquilo. (a little)(two words meaning 'a little')
  5. Mi mamá es   y divertida. (nice, feminine)(feminine form of 'simpático')

Grammar Application

Change each personality adjective to its feminine form.

  1. Make feminine: simpático →  (-o → -a)
  2. Make feminine: divertido →  (-o → -a)
  3. Make feminine: serio →  (-o → -a)
  4. Make feminine: inteligente →  (-e ending — does it change?)
  5. Make feminine: tranquilo →  (-o → -a)

Translation (English → Spanish)

Translate each sentence into Spanish. Pay attention to gender agreement and word order.

  1. She is very nice and kind.
  2. My brother is intelligent but a little serious.
  3. My friend (f) is fun and also calm.
  4. He is very kind but a little shy.
  5. My dad is serious but also fun.

Creative Construction

Describe 2-3 people's personalities using 'ser + adjective,' intensifiers (muy, un poco), and connectors (pero, también, y).

Takeaway

Describe personality with 'ser + adjective': 'Es simpática.' Use 'muy' (very) and 'un poco' (a little) before adjectives. Connect with 'y' (and), 'pero' (but), 'también' (also). Gender rules: -o → -a for feminine; -e endings don't change.

Culture note: Colombians highly value being 'amable' (kind) and 'simpático' (nice). Social warmth is deeply embedded in the culture — people are expected to be friendly, approachable, and considerate. Describing someone as 'es muy querido/a' (he/she is very beloved) or 'es una persona muy amable' is one of the highest compliments. On the other hand, being 'serio' isn't necessarily negative — it can mean someone is responsible and reliable. In professional settings, being 'serio pero amable' (serious but kind) is considered the ideal personality.
