Unit 5
Lesson 5.3

Quiero comprar…

I Want to Buy...

Now you can name food items and ask about prices — but how do you express what you want? In this lesson, you'll master three crucial verbs: 'querer' (to want), 'necesitar' (to need), and 'preferir' (to prefer). You'll also learn demonstrative adjectives ('this' and 'that') so you can point to exactly what you want. Let's go shopping for a gift!

Dialog

Valentina is shopping for a birthday gift for her friend. Watch how she uses 'quiero' (I want), 'necesito' (I need), and 'prefiero' (I prefer) to express her wishes. She also uses 'este' (this) and 'ese' (that) to point to specific items. 'Llevar' means 'to take/carry' but in shopping contexts it means 'to buy and take with you.'

Valentina
Quiero comprar un regalo para mi amiga. Necesito buscar algo bonito.
(I-want to-buy a gift for my friend. I-need to-search something pretty.)

Valentina

(I-prefer this bag. It-is very pretty. How-much costs-it?)

Sí, quiero llevar este. Necesito buscar algo más también.

WordTranslation
quiero comprarI want to buy
necesito buscarI need to look for
Pronunciation: Notice the difference between 'quiero' (KYEH-ro) and 'queremos' (keh-REH-mos). The stem change from 'e' to 'ie' only happens when the stress falls on that syllable. In 'queremos,' the stress is on '-re-,' not on the stem vowel, so it stays as 'e.' The same pattern applies to 'prefiero' vs. 'preferimos.'

Grammar: Stem-changing verbs: e→ie (querer, preferir) and demonstrative adjectives

Pronounquerer (to want)preferir (to prefer)

él/ella/ustedquiereprefiere
nosotrosqueremospreferimos
ellos/ellas/ustedesquierenprefieren
MasculineFeminine
this (near)esteesta
that (mid)eseesa
that (far)aquelaquella

Stem-changing verbs: e→ie work just like the o→ue verbs you learned — the vowel changes when it's stressed.

Querer (to want): yo quiero, tú quieres, él/ella quiere, nosotros queremos (no change!), ellos quieren

Preferir (to prefer): yo prefiero, tú prefieres, él/ella prefiere, nosotros preferimos (no change!), ellos prefieren

Necesitar (to need) is regular — no stem change: yo necesito, tú necesitas, él/ella necesita, nosotros necesitamos, ellos necesitan

All three verbs can be followed by an infinitive:

  • 'Quiero comprar frutas.' (I want to buy fruits.)

  • 'Necesito buscar un regalo.' (I need to look for a gift.)

Demonstrative adjectives point to specific items:

  • este/esta = this (near me)

  • ese/esa = that (near you)

  • aquel/aquella = that (far away)

They must match the noun's gender: 'esta camisa' (this shirt), 'ese libro' (that book).

Culture note: Gift-giving in Colombia is a warm tradition. Birthdays are celebrated with great enthusiasm, and it's common to bring a 'detalle' (a small gift or thoughtful gesture). When visiting someone's home, bringing a gift like chocolates, flowers, or a bottle of wine is customary and appreciated. In many Colombian shops, if you say 'Es para regalo' (It's for a gift), the store clerk will often wrap it beautifully for free. This service is called 'envolver para regalo' and is standard in most stores.
