Unit 5
Lesson 5.5

La ropa

Clothes

From food to fashion! In this lesson, you'll learn to name basic clothing items and describe what you're wearing. Knowing clothing vocabulary is practical for shopping, but it's also a great way to practice adjective agreement — colors and descriptions must match the gender and number of the clothing item. Valentina is helping Andrés pick out an outfit!

Dialog

Valentina is helping Andrés choose clothes for a job interview. Notice how color adjectives change to match the noun: 'camisa blanca' (feminine) but 'pantalón negro' (masculine), 'zapatos negros' (masculine plural). 'Usar' is the most common verb for 'to wear' in Colombian Spanish. The dialog shows practical vocabulary for discussing outfits.

Valentina
Andrés, ¿qué ropa vas a usar para la entrevista?
(Andrés, what clothes go-you to use for the interview?)
Andrés, what clothes are you going to wear for the interview?
Andrés
No sé. ¿Qué color es mejor? Tengo una camisa blanca.
(Not I-know. What color is better? I-have a shirt white.)
I don't know. What color is better? I have a white shirt.
Valentina
La camisa blanca es perfecta. ¿Y el pantalón?
(The shirt white is perfect. And the pants?)
The white shirt is perfect. And the pants?
Andrés
Tengo un pantalón negro. ¿Necesito una chaqueta?
(I-have a pants black. Need-I a jacket?)
I have black pants. Do I need a jacket?
Valentina
Sí, una chaqueta es buena. ¿Y los zapatos? Usa zapatos negros.
(Yes, a jacket is good. And the shoes? Use shoes black.)
Yes, a jacket is good. And the shoes? Wear black shoes.
Andrés
Tengo zapatos negros. ¿No necesito una camiseta?
(I-have shoes black. Not need-I a t-shirt?)
I have black shoes. Don't I need a t-shirt?
Valentina
No, para una entrevista no. La camisa blanca, el pantalón negro, la chaqueta y los zapatos. ¡Perfecto!
(No, for an interview no. The shirt white, the pants black, the jacket and the shoes. Perfect!)
No, not for an interview. The white shirt, black pants, the jacket, and the shoes. Perfect!
Andrés
¿Y una falda? ¡Es broma! Gracias, Valentina.
(And a skirt? It-is joke! Thanks, Valentina.)
And a skirt? Just kidding! Thanks, Valentina.

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
la camisa blancathe white shirt
los zapatos negrosthe black shoes
Pronunciation: The 'z' in 'zapatos' is pronounced like 's' in Latin America — 'sa-PA-tos.' This is different from Spain, where 'z' sounds like 'th' in 'think.' Also notice 'chaqueta': the 'ch' sounds like English 'ch' in 'church' — 'cha-KE-ta.' The 'qu' before 'e' sounds like 'k,' not 'kw.'

Grammar: Adjective agreement with clothing; 'llevar' and 'usar' for wearing

NounAdjective (white)Adjective (black)
la camisa (f. sg.)blancanegra
el pantalón (m. sg.)blanconegro
la falda (f. sg.)blancanegra
los zapatos (m. pl.)blancosnegros
las camisetas (f. pl.)blancasnegras
VerbMeaningExample
usarto use / to wearUso una camisa blanca.
llevarto carry / to wearLlevo zapatos negros.

Adjective agreement with clothing is one of the most practical applications of gender and number agreement in Spanish.

Color adjectives (and most descriptive adjectives) must match the noun in both gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural):

  • la camisa blanca (feminine singular)
  • el pantalón blanco (masculine singular)
  • las camisetas blancas (feminine plural)
  • los zapatos blancos (masculine plural)

This applies to all regular adjectives ending in -o/-a:

  • negro → negra → negros → negras

  • rojo → roja → rojos → rojas

  • blanco → blanca → blancos → blancas

'Usar' and 'llevar' both mean 'to wear':

  • 'Uso una camisa blanca.' = I wear a white shirt.

  • 'Llevo zapatos negros.' = I'm wearing black shoes.

In Colombia, 'usar' is slightly more common for habitual wearing, while 'llevar' can imply 'wearing right now.'

Takeaway

Color adjectives must match clothing nouns in gender and number: 'camisa blanca' (f. sg.), 'pantalón negro' (m. sg.), 'zapatos negros' (m. pl.). Use 'usar' or 'llevar' for 'to wear.'

Culture note: Colombians generally take pride in their appearance and dress well, even for casual outings. In Bogotá, the fashion is somewhat more formal than in coastal cities like Cartagena or Barranquilla where the heat calls for lighter clothes. For job interviews, a formal look is expected — men typically wear a 'camisa' (shirt) and 'pantalón' (dress pants), while women might wear a 'blusa' (blouse) and 'falda' or 'pantalón.' The phrase 'estar bien presentado' (to be well-presented) is important in Colombian culture. Shopping malls ('centros comerciales') are hugely popular social hubs in Bogotá, with the Andino, Unicentro, and Gran Estación being some of the most visited.
