Unit 6
Lesson 6.3

¿Qué me recomienda?

What Do You Recommend?

You can get a table and order drinks — now it's time to explore the food! In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask for recommendations, describe food flavors, and express your preferences. You'll expand on 'gustar' with 'encantar' (to love) and 'fascinar' (to fascinate), giving you more ways to talk about what you enjoy.

Dialog

Valentina asks for recommendations while Andres shares his food preferences. Notice how they use 'me gusta,' 'me encanta,' and 'no me gusta' to express different levels of liking. The adjectives 'delicioso,' 'rico,' 'picante,' 'dulce,' and 'salado' describe flavors. 'Rico' is quintessentially Colombian — it means 'delicious/tasty' and is used far more than 'delicioso' in everyday speech.

Valentina
Mesero, ¿qué me recomienda hoy? Quiero probar algo nuevo.
(Waiter, what me recommend-you today? I-want to-try something new.)
Waiter, what do you recommend today? I want to try something new.
Andrés
A mí me gustan los platos con sopa. ¿La sopa del día es deliciosa?
(To me me please the dishes with soup. The soup of-the day is delicious?)
I like dishes with soup. Is the soup of the day delicious?
Valentina
Me encanta la ensalada de este restaurante. Es muy rica.
(Me enchants the salad of this restaurant. Is very tasty.)
I love the salad at this restaurant. It's very tasty.
Andrés
¿El plato del día es picante? No me gusta la comida picante.
(The dish of-the day is spicy? Not me pleases the food spicy.)
Is the daily special spicy? I don't like spicy food.
Valentina
No, no es picante. Es un poco dulce y muy rico.
(No, not is spicy. Is a little sweet and very tasty.)
No, it's not spicy. It's a little sweet and very tasty.
Andrés
Perfecto. ¿Y la sopa? ¿Es salada?
(Perfect. And the soup? Is salty?)
Perfect. And the soup? Is it salty?
Valentina
La sopa es deliciosa, ni salada ni picante. Te la recomiendo.
(The soup is delicious, neither salty nor spicy. You it I-recommend.)
The soup is delicious, neither salty nor spicy. I recommend it to you.
Andrés
Entonces voy a probar la sopa y la ensalada también.
(Then I-go to try the soup and the salad also.)
Then I'm going to try the soup and the salad too.

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
¿qué me recomienda?what do you recommend? (formal)
me encantaI love it (lit. 'it enchants me')
Pronunciation: The word 'delicioso' has four syllables: 'de-li-CIO-so.' The stress falls on the third syllable. Notice the 'ci' is pronounced like 'si' in Latin America. For 'picante,' stress the second syllable: 'pi-CAN-te.' Practice these flavor words — you'll use them every time you eat!

Grammar: Expanding 'gustar' — me encanta, me fascina, no me gusta

ExpressionMeaningExample
me gustaI likeMe gusta la sopa.
me gustanI like (plural)Me gustan las arepas.
me encantaI loveMe encanta la ensalada.
me encantanI love (plural)Me encantan los jugos.
no me gustaI don't likeNo me gusta el picante.
me fascinaI'm fascinated byMe fascina la comida colombiana.

You already know me gusta (I like). Now let's expand your toolkit!

Me encanta = I love (stronger than 'me gusta'):

  • Me encanta la sopa. (I love the soup.)

  • Me encantan los jugos. (I love the juices.)

Me fascina = I'm fascinated by / I absolutely love:

  • Me fascina la comida colombiana. (I'm fascinated by Colombian food.)

No me gusta = I don't like:

  • No me gusta la comida picante. (I don't like spicy food.)

All these verbs follow the same pattern as 'gustar':

  • Use the singular form (gusta/encanta/fascina) with singular nouns or infinitives

  • Use the plural form (gustan/encantan/fascinan) with plural nouns

Examples:

  • Me gusta el cafe. / Me gustan las arepas.

  • Le encanta la sopa. / Les encantan los platos.

  • Nos fascina la ensalada. / Nos fascinan los postres.

Takeaway

Use '¿Que me recomienda?' to ask for suggestions. Express preferences with 'me gusta' (I like), 'me encanta' (I love), and 'no me gusta' (I don't like). Describe flavors with 'rico,' 'delicioso,' 'picante,' 'dulce,' and 'salado.'

Culture note: In Colombian restaurants, soup is almost always part of the meal. A traditional Colombian lunch ('almuerzo corriente' or 'menu del dia') starts with soup, followed by a main course with rice, meat, beans, and a salad, plus a drink and sometimes dessert — all for a very reasonable price. Asking '¿Que me recomienda?' is perfectly natural and waiters are usually happy to share their favorites. Don't be afraid to ask!
