Unit 7
Lesson 7.5

¿Cómo es tu casa?

What's Your Place Like?

How do you compare things? In this lesson, you'll learn to describe your home using comparisons — bigger, smaller, cleaner, more comfortable. You'll master the structures 'más… que' (more… than), 'menos… que' (less… than), and 'tan… como' (as… as), plus the irregular comparatives 'mejor' and 'peor.' These are essential for expressing opinions and preferences!

Dialog

Valentina and Andrés compare their apartments. Listen for the comparative structures: 'más grande que' (bigger than), 'menos limpio' (less clean), 'mejor que' (better than). Notice that 'mejor' and 'peor' don't need 'más' — they already mean 'better' and 'worse.' Also observe how adjectives agree with the noun they describe: 'más limpia' (feminine, agreeing with 'cocina'), 'más claro' (masculine, agreeing with 'balcón').

Valentina
Mi apartamento es pequeño pero muy cómodo.
(My apartment is small but very comfortable.)
My apartment is small but very comfortable.
(The mine is more big than the yours, but is less clean.)
Mine is bigger than yours, but it's less clean.
Valentina
¡Ja!
My kitchen is more bright than my bedroom. The bedroom is a little dark.)
Ha! My kitchen is brighter than my bedroom. The bedroom is a little dark.
Necesito limpiar.
(My living-room is big but is dirty today. I-need to clean.)
My living room is big but it's dirty today. I need to clean.
Valentina
(My house is more small than your house, but is more clean.)
My house is smaller than your house, but it's cleaner.
Andrés
Sí, tu casa es mejor que la mía en eso. Pero mi balcón es menos oscuro.
(Yes, your house is better than the mine in that. But my balcony is less dark.)
Yes, your house is better than mine in that regard. But my balcony is less dark.
Valentina
(Is true. Your balcony is more bright and more comfortable than the mine.)
That's true. Your balcony is brighter and more comfortable than mine.
Andrés
Al final, las dos casas son buenas. Ninguna es peor que la otra.
(In the end, the two houses are good. Neither is worse than the other.)
In the end, both homes are good. Neither is worse than the other.

Pronunciation: The Spanish 'ñ' in 'pequeño' is pronounced like 'ny' in 'canyon': pe-KE-nyo. Make sure to distinguish it from plain 'n': 'peño' (with ñ) sounds different from 'peno' (with n). Practice: pe-KE-nyo.

ComparisonStructureExample
more … thanmás + adj.
less … thanmenos + adj. + queEs menos oscuro que mi cuarto.
as … astan + adj.

Comparatives let you compare two things. Spanish has three main structures:

1. más… que (more… than / -er… than):

  • Mi casa es más grande que tu casa. (My house is bigger than your house.)

(The kitchen is cleaner than the bathroom.)

2. menos… que (less… than):

  • Es menos oscuro que mi cuarto. (It's less dark than my room.)

(My neighborhood is less noisy than yours.)

3. tan… como (as… as):

  • Es tan cómodo como el tuyo. (It's as comfortable as yours.)

(My house is as clean as yours.)

Important: Never say 'más mejor' or 'más peor' — that's a common mistake. 'Mejor' and 'peor' already mean 'more good' and 'more bad.'

Exercises

Fill in the Blanks

  4. Mi apartamento es   pero cómodo.(the opposite of 'big')

  2. limpio / mi cuarto / tu cuarto → Mi cuarto es   limpio   tu cuarto.(less … than)

Creative Construction

Compare two places (apartments, rooms, neighborhoods) using comparative structures from this lesson.

Takeaway

Compare with más… que (more than), menos… que (less than), and tan… como (as… as). Use irregular forms mejor (better) and peor (worse) — never say 'más mejor' or 'más peor'!

Culture note: Housing in Bogotá is classified by 'estratos' (socioeconomic strata), numbered 1 through 6. Estrato 1 is the lowest income level and estrato 6 is the highest. Your estrato determines your utility rates — higher estratos pay more. When Colombians compare neighborhoods, estrato is often part of the conversation. Chapinero is typically estrato 4-5, while Usaquén is estrato 5-6. You might hear: 'Mi barrio es estrato 3 — es más económico que Usaquén.' This system is unique to Colombia.
