Unit 8
Lesson 8.2

El fútbol y el ciclismo

Soccer and Cycling

Time to talk about sports! In this lesson, you'll learn vocabulary for popular Colombian sports — especially fútbol (soccer) and ciclismo (cycling). You'll also master two tricky verbs: 'jugar' with its stem change (u→ue) and 'salir' with its irregular yo form (salgo). Plus, you'll learn when to use 'también' and 'tampoco' to agree with others.

Dialog

Andrés and Valentina talk about Colombian sports. Notice how Andrés uses 'jugar' with its stem change — 'yo juego fútbol.' They also practice agreement: when Valentina says she also likes something, she uses 'a mí también me gusta.' When she agrees with a negative statement, she uses 'a mí tampoco.' The verb 'montar en bicicleta' means 'to ride a bicycle' — very common in Bogotá, a cycling-obsessed city.

Andrés
¿Viste el partido de fútbol ayer? ¡Millonarios ganó!
(You-saw the match of soccer yesterday? Millonarios won!)
Did you see the soccer match yesterday? Millonarios won!
Valentina
¡Sí! El equipo jugó muy bien. ¿Quién es tu jugador favorito?
(Yes! The team played very well. Who is your player favorite?)
Yes! The team played very well. Who's your favorite player?
Andrés
Me gusta mucho el ciclismo también. Voy a montar en bicicleta el sábado.
(Me pleases much the cycling also. I-go to to-ride on bicycle the Saturday.)
I also really like cycling. I'm going to ride my bike on Saturday.
Valentina
¡Qué bien! Yo entreno todos los días. No quiero perder la forma.
(How good! I train all the days. Not I-want to-lose the form.)
Great! I train every day. I don't want to lose my fitness.
Andrés
¿También te gusta el fútbol? Mi equipo es el mejor.
(Also you pleases the soccer? My team is the best.)
Do you also like soccer? My team is the best.
Valentina
A mí tampoco me gusta perder. Yo también entreno mucho.
(To me neither me pleases to-lose. I also train much.)
I don't like losing either. I also train a lot.
Andrés
Vamos a montar en bicicleta juntos. Es un buen partido entre amigos.
(We-go to to-ride on bicycle together. It-is a good match between friends.)
Let's ride bikes together. It's a good match between friends.
Valentina
¡Dale! El jugador que llega último pierde. ¡A ganar!
(Go-ahead! The player that arrives last loses. To win!)
Sure! The player who arrives last loses. Let's win!

Useful chunks

WordTranslation
montar en bicicletato ride a bicycle
a mí también / a mí tampocome too / me neither
Pronunciation: The word 'bicicleta' has four syllables: bi-ci-CLE-ta. The stress falls on the third syllable. Practice breaking it down: 'bi' (like 'bee'), 'ci' (like 'see'), 'CLE' (like 'clay'), 'ta' (like 'tah'). In casual speech, Colombians often shorten it to 'bici' (BEE-see).

Grammar: Present tense of 'jugar' (u→ue) and 'salir' (irregular yo: salgo)

Subjectjugar (u→ue)salir (yo irreg.)
yojuegosalgo
juegassales
usted/él/ellajuegasale
nosotrosjugamossalimos
ellos/ellasjuegansalen

también (also/too) — used in affirmative agreement: A mí también me gusta.
tampoco (neither/either) — used in negative agreement: A mí tampoco me gusta.

Jugar (u→ue) is a stem-changing verb. The 'u' in the stem becomes 'ue' in all forms except nosotros:

  • yo juego, tú juegas, él/ella juega, nosotros jugamos, ellos juegan

'Jugar' is used for games and sports: 'Juego fútbol' (I play soccer).

Salir has an irregular yo form: salgo. All other forms are regular:

  • yo salgo, tú sales, él/ella sale, nosotros salimos, ellos salen

'Salir' means 'to go out' or 'to leave': 'Salgo a las ocho' (I leave at eight).

También vs. Tampoco:

  • También = also/too (positive): — Me gusta el fútbol. — A mí también me gusta.

  • Tampoco = neither/either (negative): — No me gusta perder. — A mí tampoco me gusta perder.

Note the structure with 'a mí' for emphasis — it mirrors the 'gustar' construction.

Exercises

Fill in the Blanks

Complete each sentence with the correct word.

  1. Yo   fútbol con mis amigos los sábados.(first person of 'jugar' — stem change u→ue)
  2. El   de Millonarios fue emocionante.(a specific game or match)
  3. Andrés va a   en bicicleta el fin de semana.(to ride — used with 'en bicicleta')
  4. El   marcó un gol increíble.(a person who plays on a team)
  5. Valentina   todos los días para estar en forma.(to practice/train — regular -ar verb, 3rd person)

Grammar Application

Conjugate the verb or complete with 'también' / 'tampoco'.

  1. yo / jugar →  (jugar — yo form, stem change u→ue)
  2. nosotros / jugar →  (jugar — nosotros form, no stem change)
  3. yo / salir →  (salir — yo form, irregular)
  4. — Me gusta el fútbol. — A mí   me gusta.(positive agreement — 'me too')
  5. — No me gusta perder. — A mí   me gusta perder.(negative agreement — 'me neither')

Translation (English → Spanish)

  4. Let's ride bikes.
  5. The player trains every day.

Creative Construction

Write 1-2 sentences about sports you enjoy or a match/game you want to watch, using at least 3 words from this lesson.

Takeaway

Remember that 'jugar' changes its stem (juego, juegas, juega) and 'salir' has an irregular yo form (salgo). Use 'también' for positive agreement and 'tampoco' for negative agreement.

Culture note: Fútbol is a religion in Colombia. The two main Bogotá teams — Millonarios (blue) and Independiente Santa Fe (red) — have a fierce rivalry. Match days transform the city with fans wearing team colors and gathering at bars and plazas. Colombia's cycling tradition is equally impressive — the country's mountainous terrain produces world-class climbers, and Egan Bernal's 2019 Tour de France victory was celebrated as a national holiday.
