Dialog

Valentina and Andrés plan their weekend. Notice the different ways to make suggestions: Andrés uses '¿Quieres salir?' (Do you want to go out?) and Valentina replies with '¡Dale!' — the quintessential Colombian 'yes!' They also use '¿Vamos a + infinitive?' to suggest activities. When Andrés can't do something, he says 'No puedo' (I can't). The adjectives 'divertido' (fun) and 'aburrido' (boring) describe activities and experiences.

Valentina
¡Hola, Andrés! ¿Qué vas a hacer el fin de semana?
(Hello, Andrés! What you-go to to-do the end of week?)
Hello, Andrés! What are you going to do this weekend?
Andrés
No sé. ¿Quieres salir a pasear por el parque?
(Not I-know. You-want to-go-out to to-stroll through the park?)
I don't know. Do you want to go out for a walk in the park?
Valentina
¡Dale! Me encanta pasear. ¿Y después vamos al cine?
(Go-ahead! Me enchants to-stroll. And after we-go to-the cinema?)
Sure! I love strolling. And after that, shall we go to the movies?
Andrés
¡Buena idea! Hay una película muy divertida. No es aburrida.
(Good idea! There-is a movie very fun. Not is boring.)
Good idea! There's a very fun movie. It's not boring.
Valentina
Perfecto. ¿Quieres visitar el museo también?
(Perfect. You-want to-visit the museum also?)
Perfect. Do you want to visit the museum too?
Andrés
No puedo. El fin de semana voy a salir con mi familia primero.
(Not I-can. The end of week I-go to to-go-out with my family first.)
I can't. This weekend I'm going to go out with my family first.
Valentina
¡Claro! Entonces vamos al parque y al cine. Va a ser divertido.
(Of-course! Then we-go to-the park and to-the cinema. It-goes to to-be fun.)
Of course! Then let's go to the park and the movies. It's going to be fun.
Andrés
¡Dale! Me gusta pasear contigo. El fin de semana no va a ser aburrido.
(Go-ahead! Me pleases to-stroll with-you. The end of week not goes to to-be boring.)
Sure! I like strolling with you. The weekend isn't going to be boring.

WordTranslation
¿vamos a…?shall we...? / let's...?
¡buena idea!good idea!
Pronunciation: The word 'divertido' has the stress on the third syllable: di-ver-TI-do. Notice the 'v' and 'b' sound the same in Spanish — both are pronounced like a soft 'b' between vowels. So 'divertido' sounds like 'dee-ber-TEE-do.' Practice saying it smoothly.

Grammar: Making invitations and suggestions

FunctionStructureExample
Invitation (informal)¿Quieres + infinitive?¿Quieres salir?
Suggestion (let's)¿Vamos a + infinitive?¿Vamos a pasear?
Accepting¡Dale! / ¡Claro! / ¡Buena idea!¡Dale! Vamos.
DecliningNo puedo. / Otro día.No puedo, lo siento.

Making invitations and suggestions is essential for social life. Here are the key patterns:

1. ¿Quieres + infinitive? (Do you want to...?)

  • ¿Quieres salir esta noche? = Do you want to go out tonight?

  • ¿Quieres ir al cine? = Do you want to go to the movies?

2. ¿Vamos a + infinitive? (Shall we...? / Let's...?)

  • ¿Vamos a pasear? = Shall we take a walk?

  • ¿Vamos al parque? = Shall we go to the park?

3. Accepting:

  • ¡Dale! = Sure! Let's do it! (very Colombian)

  • ¡Claro! = Of course!

  • ¡Buena idea! = Good idea!

4. Declining:

  • No puedo. = I can't.

  • Otro día. = Another day.

  • Lo siento, no puedo. = I'm sorry, I can't.

'¡Dale!' is the go-to acceptance word in Colombian Spanish. You'll hear it dozens of times a day in Bogotá.

Culture note: Bogotanos love their weekends. Saturdays often start with a visit to a panadería (bakery) for fresh pan and coffee, followed by errands or sports. Sundays are family day — many families gather for a big almuerzo (lunch). The Ciclovía on Sundays transforms 128 km of roads into car-free zones for cycling, running, and walking. Parks like Parque Simón Bolívar and Parque de la 93 fill with families, food vendors, and street performers.
