Dialog

Valentina and Andrés share tips for staying healthy. Notice how they use multiple structures for advice: 'es importante + infinitive' (it's important to...), 'debemos + infinitive' (we should...), 'es necesario + infinitive' (it's necessary to...). They discuss exercise, sleep, diet, and hydration — all common health conversation topics.

Valentina
Andrés, ¿qué haces para tener buena salud?
(Andrés, what you-do for to-have good health?)
Andrés, what do you do to stay in good health?
Andrés
Bueno, es importante hacer ejercicio todos los días. Yo corro y monto bicicleta.
(Well, is important to-do exercise all the days. I run and ride bicycle.)
Well, it's important to exercise every day. I run and ride a bicycle.
Valentina
¡Muy bien! También es necesario dormir bien, ¿verdad?
(Very good! Also is necessary to-sleep well, right?)
Very good! It's also necessary to sleep well, right?
Andrés
Sí, debemos dormir ocho horas. Y comer sano es un hábito muy saludable.
(Yes, we-must sleep eight hours. And to-eat healthy is a habit very healthy.)
Yes, we should sleep eight hours. And eating healthy is a very healthy habit.
Valentina
Yo bebo mucha agua todos los días. Es necesario beber agua para la salud.
(I drink much water all the days. Is necessary to-drink water for the health.)
I drink a lot of water every day. It's necessary to drink water for your health.
Andrés
Tienes razón. Un buen hábito es beber agua y comer frutas.
(You-have reason. A good habit is to-drink water and eat fruits.)
You're right. A good habit is to drink water and eat fruits.
Valentina
¿Qué más debemos hacer? Yo creo que es importante no tener estrés.
(What more we-must do? I believe that is important not to-have stress.)
What else should we do? I think it's important not to have stress.
Andrés
Claro. Debemos descansar y hacer ejercicio. Es necesario cuidar la salud.
(Sure. We-must rest and do exercise. Is necessary to-care-for the health.)
Of course. We should rest and exercise. It's necessary to take care of our health.

Pronunciation: The 'h' in 'hábito' is completely silent in Spanish — say 'AH-bi-to.' This is true for all Spanish words starting with 'h': hacer (a-SER), hambre (AM-bre), hospital (os-pi-TAL). 'Saludable' has four syllables: sa-lu-DA-ble.

Grammar: Review of obligation and advice — 'tener que', 'deber', 'necesitar' + infinitive

StructureExampleStrength
tener que + infinitiveTengo que hacer ejercicio.Strong obligation
deber + infinitiveDebes dormir bien.Recommendation/advice
necesitar + infinitiveNecesito beber agua.Personal need
es importante + infinitiveEs importante comer sano.General importance
es necesario + infinitiveEs necesario descansar.General necessity

In this lesson, you review and expand on three structures for expressing obligation, advice, and necessity:

1. Tener que + infinitive (strong obligation — personal):

  • Tengo que hacer ejercicio. (I have to exercise.)

  • Tienes que dormir bien. (You have to sleep well.)

2. Deber + infinitive (advice/recommendation — personal):

  • Debes beber agua. (You should drink water.)

  • Debemos comer sano. (We should eat healthy.)

3. Es importante / Es necesario + infinitive (general statements):

  • Es importante hacer ejercicio. (It's important to exercise.)

  • Es necesario descansar. (It's necessary to rest.)

The personal structures (tener que, deber) change with the subject. The impersonal ones (es importante, es necesario) stay the same — they're great for giving general health advice without pointing fingers!

Culture note: Colombians generally lead active lifestyles. Bogotá's famous 'Ciclovía' closes major roads every Sunday for cyclists, runners, and walkers — over 120 km of car-free streets! The city also has many parks and outdoor gyms ('gimnasios al aire libre') in public parks. Colombian cuisine includes many healthy staples: fresh tropical fruits (guanábana, lulo, maracuyá), beans, plantains, and corn. The expression 'Mente sana en cuerpo sano' (healthy mind in a healthy body) is well-known and valued.
